How to Properly Ship Using Corrugated Boxes

Are you planning to ship a package? Shipping is made easier with corrugated boxes due to their reliable durability and affordability. Brown Packaging manufactures corrugated boxes of all sizes and we are committed to simplifying the shipping process for all of our clients.

Shipping Basics

Depending on what you are shipping, you will need several different shipping materials. First, purchase your corrugated boxes, packing tape, a tape gun, box stuffing like bubble wrap, Styrofoam beans, expandos, and Kraft paper. These essential materials will help you ensure that your package arrives at its destination undamaged.

Remember, shipping in Canada is very expensive. Canada Post’s rates are difficult to cope with if you operate a small business. Large shipping services like UPS, FedEx, and DHL cater to larger businesses and can severely impact your bottom-line. When packing your products, try to reduce weight and dimensions as much as possible. When looking at corrugated boxes, pick a box that offers enough room for your product and ensure that it has a little extra space for your stuffing materials, but don’t overdo it.

After you have selected your corrugated boxes, ensure that they fit your product and packing materials. If everything checks out, tape the box together and start placing your products inside. Depending on your product, look at the packing process as a game of Tetris. Fit all of your products snuggly in the box and pad them with like bubble wrap, Kraft paper, and other packing materials. Luckily, bubble wrap and Kraft paper are super light and cost-effective. Avoid using heavier packing materials unless absolutely necessary, they can quickly escalate your shipping costs and eat out of your profits.

It is important to understand the capabilities of your products. If you are shipping books, a simple layer of bubble wrap and the protection afforded by corrugated boxes should be enough to protect your product. However, if you are shipping mugs, you will want to heavily insulate each mug with a corrugated shell, bubble wrap, and you will want to make sure the product fits tightly into the box as this will remove unnecessary movement and reduce the chance of breakage. Lastly, place any required packing slips into your box.

Once your item is properly packed, you will want to seal your corrugated boxes. We recommend that you invest in a sturdy tape gun, this will improve your speed and accuracy when sealing boxes. Using high quality tape, seal the seams of the box. If you notice any areas on the box that are being pushed by your product, apply tape to those areas to improve the structural integrity of your package. Don’t be afraid to add a little extra tape. Ensuring that your corrugated boxes stay closed is incredibly important as no one wants their box bursting open during the shipping process. If your corrugated boxes do break, you can guarantee that your shipping courier will do a hasty job in putting it back together. Take the time to properly seal your boxes.

Depending on your method of shipping, the last step is to apply your shipping labels. Shipping labels can be printed from home, and in most cases, printing them from home will afford you additional shipping discounts. Also, if you are using Canada Post, apply for their Venture One discount.
